System Restore did not complete successfully 0x80042308

System Restore did not complete successfully 0x80042308 – In many cases we need to perform System Restore in our system. Like application malfunctioning, virus impression, slow processing speed, etc. So, we decide to restore our PC in previous restore point. But System Restore didn’t completed successfully and reflects with an error details “The specified object was not found (0x80042308)”. Every time we set a new restore point and results the same error. So what to do? We have couple of fixes to this System Restore error. Let us discuss each of them in brief.System Restore did not complete successfully 0x80042308

Normally rebooting the PC might resolve the issue. But if this didn’t work then switch to the advanced troubleshooting steps given below.

Procedure to fix System Restore did not complete successfully 0x80042308

  • Disable Antivirus Temporarily

We install an Antivirus for security aspects. An antivirus is a program which protects our system from malware attacks. The antivirus blocks suspicious program running in our system. It also halts execution of malicious prone software.

It might be possible that an antivirus blocks the normal system restore execution. In that case disable the antivirus and check if problem is solved. When problem is solved, restart the disabled antivirus program.

  • Restart Volume Shadow Copy Service

In most cases the error (0x80042308) occurs due to Volume Shadow Copy corruption. So we need to restart the volume shadow copy service. Before restarting this service remove all restore points stored in our PC. First of all run the System File Checker.

Procedure to remove all previous restore points (Windows 10)

Go to Search bar and Type Computer. Select “View advanced system settings”. Navigate to System Protection tab. Select the Available Drives under the Protection Settings. After selecting click on Configure button. Under Restore Settings, you have two options.

A. Turn on System Protection.

B. Disable System Protection.

You need to select the “Disable System Protection” option. Click Apply & Ok. When problem is solved, click on “Turn on System Protection”.

Procedure to restart volume shadow copy service

Go to Search bar and type services.msc to open Services Manager. Search and locate “Volume Shadow Copy Service”. Right Click on it, first click on Stop then click on Start. Finally, Create a System Restore point now.

  • Start PC in Clean Boot Mode

Sometimes a third party app might block the System Restore execution. So we need to find out the application which is blocking the System Restore procedure. For this, we have to Start PC in Clean Boot Mode.

Open system with administrative privilege. Press Win+R to open Run Command Window. Type msconfig.exe & press enter to open System Configuration Window.


Go to General Tab and select Selective Startup. Uncheck the “Load startup items” option and Click on Apply & then OK. Navigate to Services Tab and select “Hide all Microsoft Services” option available on left side of System Configuration Window. Then click on Disable All button. Finally Restart the PC.


You may need to manually disable one item after another to try and pinpoint the one that is causing the problem. Once you have identified the offender, you can consider removing or disabling it. After fixing the issue restart the PC in Normal mode.
