It will be annoying when a long time setup process get this error on near completion. The major reason behind this error would be reinstallation of Microsoft Office. An assumption is that the setup gets stuck due to issues with the Task Scheduler.

Procedure to fix MS Office Pro Plus 2016 encountered an error during setup

Uninstall MS office program and remove traces in Task scheduler.

The leftover traces of the previous Microsoft program might be the issue, so it is advisable to uninstall the existing office installation. You can use embedded troubleshooter from Microsoft to completely uninstall the latest version of Windows.

Go to the Search bar and type Task Scheduler and press enter to open the Windows Task Scheduler. Now navigate to Task Scheduler library > Microsoft > Office. Delete the folder in the right pane and restart the computer. Try to install the Office Plus and check if problem is solved else proceeds next.

Step 2 – Rename the Microsoft Help folder –

Open run window by pressing Win+R and type the command %programdata%. Now right click and rename the Microsoft Help folder to Microsoft Help.old. Then restart the computer.

Step 3 – Remove traces from the Windows Registry –

Try the registry method to delete the leftover traces of the previous version of MS Office on the system. Press Win+R to open run window. Then type regedit command and press enter. It will then open Registry Editor. Now navigate to the following registry key given below –

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Office

Then right click on the office registry key and click on delete. It will ask you a confirmation message to delete the entity. So, click on Yes.
