Reasons for Icons not showing in Visual Studio Code

Since Visual studio code uses SVG Icons which is normally associated with the software. There may be possibility that these SVG icons are not properly associated with the software. The operating system might not be able to read and integrate the SVG Icons for the software. To resolve this issue we need to add extension association inside the operating system by “Image/svg+xml”

Procedure to resolve “Images Icons not showing in Visual studio code”

There are two basic methods to resolve Images Icons not showing in Visual Studio Code.

  • Using Command Prompt Window

Open the Command Prompt window with administrative privilege on your computer. You can open Command Prompt using Cmd on Search tab. Then right click on it and select run as administrator. Now enter the following command –

REG ADD HKCR.svg /f /v “Content Type” /t REG_SZ /d image/svg+xml

After running the command the icon will start showing normally.

  • Using Registry Editor Interface

Run the regedit command to open the Registry Editor. Open the command key named – “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT” and look up the key labelled “.svg”.

Set its Content-Type data value to image/svg+xml

After all done exit and restart your computer.
