How to reset file association to default program – We generally click a file anywhere in our PC and as a result it will open in a default program. Although a file must be associated with a program to open in a correct way. Windows will allow you to reset files to Microsoft recommended defaults. When a user opens a file, it will open in OS default app which is linked with it. For example: When we open a video file, it will either open in default program or user’s choice. The video file will open in either VLC or Window Media Player. It means users are independent of choosing their own preferable associated programs.
Similarly, when we open a web file it will open either in a default program or program set by user. The web file will open either in Windows Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. So, all these settings depend upon user’s choice. A user can easily set their own default program for all such files. In this article we will illustrates methods to set your own default associated program for each types of file. There are two options available to a user –
- Follow the Microsoft recommended default program.
- Set own default program for file association
Procedure to reset file association to default program
Go to Settings and click on Apps settings. On left side of the window, click on Defaults apps. A user can see related picture given here. Now scroll down below to see “Reset to Microsoft recommended defaults” dialog option. Followed by this dialog there is a button for Reset. Just click on Reset button and then it will automatically set all files association to their default program.
Alternatively – Open WinX menu > Settings > Apps Settings > click on default apps > click on Reset button.
