How to fix Desktop Location is not available – Whenever we login, it will land up to Desktop. The desktop contains lots of files which might create chaos in searching and processing. The desktop is the center of Windows Operating System. But sometimes PC displays an error saying location is not available or say Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. The system throws such an error message due to misconfiguration in the registry or user profile settings or location misleading. Procedure to fix Desktop Location is not available
Before proceeding further, we need administrator privilege to perform all the troubleshootings.
- Copy the Desktop folder to System Profile Manually
If you read the error message carefully, you will find error in path of desktop location. It might be showing “C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile” as path but usual desktop location is at “C:\Users\<username>\Desktop”.
So just copy the actual path and navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile. Select & Paste the Desktop path just copied. Afterwards Restart the Computer and check if problem is solved. In case you don’t find the desktop folder, change the view settings to show hidden files to reveal it.
- Use Registry Editor to Add the Desktop location
Press Win+R on Run Prompt, type regedit and Enter. Now navigate to the key given below.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders. Open the value data by double clicking and enter the following value.
a. %USERPROFILE%\Desktop b. C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Desktop
Finally Click on OK and quit the Registry Editor. Restart the Computer and check if problem is solved.
- Update the RPC settings as follows
Go to Start menu Search box and type Services. In Services, scroll down to find “Remote Procedure Call”. Check the Status saying “Started“. Set it to “Automatic”. Alternatively, you can set RPC Locator to Manual. Hope the article works for you. Thank you.
