How to fix A component of the operating system has expired error – In this article we will see a new problem which occurs regularly on our PC. The monitor gets blue with a message saying “A component of the operating system has expired”. This correlates with an error code: Oxc0000605 related to winload.exe file. The basic reason behind the error – Changes done on BIOS or any unwanted changes done automatically.

Some facts about Winload.exe or Windows Boot Loader

This executable file is started by BOOTMGR boot manager process which is used to load essential device drivers. The corruption of Winload.exe file will also show such an error message.

  • Perform Startup Repair –

Being on Blue screen press F8 to access startup settings. In case you can’t start up your PC then run the Startup repair. Running Startup Repair will fix startup related issues within few seconds.

  • Reset BIOS

If you have changed something in BIOS and afterwards this message is showing then to fix the issue just revert the changes made. If you have attempted multiple changes then reset the BIOS.

  • Run System File Checker

This is intended to replace the bad system file with the good one. In Windows, it is easy to run the command-line tool. Open the command prompt Window with administrator privilege to enter the command given below.

Sfc / scannow

After few minutes restart the computer and check if problem is solved.

  • Repair the Windows System Image

You may run DISM (Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management) which help you to troubleshoot the issue. Open the command prompt Window and run the below command. It will search the missing component and fix it automatically.

Dism / Online/ CheckHealth

  • Reset Windows OS (e.g. 10)

You may perform Windows Reset without losing any files. So, it is better to reset the system instead of deleting all files (documents and media).

  • Repair the OS

The repair of earlier version of Windows can be done using installation media.
