How to disable Microsoft Edge Browser Extension Installation – You may be using Microsoft Edge browser as your favourite browser and want to disallow installation of extension then read the full article. The task will be possible if you possess administrative privilege and do not want to allow users to install them. The installation of extensions can be disabled using either Group Policy Editor or Registry Editor. Before we process further to disallow or block installation of extensions look at the possible consequences.

  1. The whole Extensions function gets deactivated immediately.
  2. A user cannot install/ Uninstall an extension
  3. All the installed extensions gets disabled automatically

Disable installation of Microsoft Edge extensions using Group Policy

Open the Run command prompt by pressing (Win+R) or refer to Cortana Search box for Run window. Enter the command gpedit.msc and press enter. This will open the Group policy editor. Then navigate to the path written below.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Edge

Then select Microsoft Edge and right click to see the Allow Extensions Settings. Then double click on it to open the Properties box. Select Disabled and save your changes by clicking the Apply/OK button. Restart you computer to see if problem is solved.

Block installation of Microsoft Edge extensions using Registry Editor –

To do the same with registry editor, user need to create a registry backup and a system restore point first. Open the Run command window and navigate to the following path written below.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

The troubleshooting refers to the creation of a new key. For that right click on Microsoft and select New followed by Key and name it as MicrosoftEdge. Right click on MicrosoftEdge key and select New followed by key and name it as Extensions. Select Extensions key, right click on the right hand side and select New followed by DWORD (32-bit) Value. Enter ExtensionsEnabled as Value name and 0 as Value data. Restart the computer and check if problem is solved.
