Close Cortana using Registry Group Policy in Windows 10 – We have heard about Cortana and its awesome features. It is like your Personal Assistant (PA) who control and manage your day to day office works. Boss assigns all tasks to PA and PA executes all tasks in specific manner. Likewise, a computer user assigns all tasks to Cortana and Cortana clarifies all tasks in the background. With the help of Cortana, you can reduce most of your daily tasks. But if you think that there is no need of it, then you can disable or turn off completely. In this article, we focus on a new and interesting troubleshooting related to Cortana Personal Assistant. We look on two unique methods to disable/ turn off Cortana Personal Assistant.

Procedure to Close Cortana using Registry Editor

First of all, examine the disabling of Cortana using Registry Editor. Type Regedit in the search taskbar and press enter. Then Registry Editor will open. Now navigate to the following path.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search

On the left panel, right click on Windows Search key and select New > DWORD (32 bit) Value. Assign DWORD value name as AllowCortana. Then set its value to 0 (Zero) to completely disable the feature.

Now if you wish to enable Cortana, then either delete the AllowCortana file or change its value from 0 to 1.

Procedure to Close Cortana using Group Policy –

Go to Taskbar > Search bar and Type gpedit.msc, Press Enter. Then Local Group Policy Editor will open. After that, navigate to the following Path.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.

Now Double click on Allow Cortana to Open Settings box. Set the Settings to Disabled. Then click on Apply and Exit.

The right column of the Allow Cortana Window specifies the following suggestions.

“This policy setting specifies whether Cortana is allowed on the device. If you enable or don’t configure this setting, Cortana will be allowed on the device. If you disable this setting, Cortana will be turned off. When Cortana is off, users will still be able to use search to find things on the device and on the Internet”.
