Cannot start Microsoft Outlook, The command line argument is not valid
In this article we will solve the problem with four distinct operations explained below.
Open Outlook in Safe mode and disable the add-ins
To open Outlook in Safer mode, Press Win+R and run the command - Outlook /safe
This step will eliminate issues due to corrupt add in. So, you need to run the above command to open outlook in safe mode. After entering the command, it will ask you to choose the profile that you want to use. So, go to drop down menu and select a profile, click on OK button. Once Microsoft Outlook is opened in safe mode successfully, it will open with disabled add-ins. It means that some add in is troubling the Outlook. So, identify those add- ins and disable/ remove it completely. Alternatively, a user can enable/ disable/ remove add-ins by -
File > Options > Add-ins > select COM Add-ins from drop down menu and Click on Go. At last start the Outlook Windows normally and check if problem is solved.
Re-register Outlook files –
The next step is to re-register the Outlook dll files and check if problem is solved. So, Run the command by opening Run prompt (Press Win+R)
Use Inbox Repair tool of Microsoft Outlook -
This step will repair corrupt PST file which might hinder the opening of Microsoft Outlook. Refer any of these paths given below.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
After navigating to this path you will find the application called SCANPST.EXE. Double click on it and open the program. Click on Browse button and select the backup file and start repairing.
Reinstall the Outlook -
If any of the above solution does not work, we need to repair or reinstall Microsoft Outlook. Control Panel > Uninstall a Program > Right click on Office > Change. Select your options to repair Office application.
