It is not used over the whole disk but applied to each individual sector. But sometimes you may receive an error "Bitlocker Setup could not find a target system drive to prepare; you may need to manually prepare your drive for Bitlocker". In this article we suggest you some solutions to this problem. The basic reason for this error message are –

a. You do not have sufficient free disk space

b. the partition contains files that cannot be moved.

After the partition size is reduced, at least 10 percent of the active partition must remain free. This can be done by running the Disk Cleanup Tool. Disable Hibernation is also fruitful which delete the large hiberfil.sys file and move files to another partition or an external drive.




  • The partition contains files that does not move –





Some files do not move which prevents system from defragmenting and resizing. These files are Page files, Hibernation files (Hiberfil.sys), Windows Registry Files and NTFS metadata files.


Procedure to disable the Paging file – Go to Virtual Memory Settings and Type "performance" in the search bar and open the option for "Adjust appearance and performance for Windows." In Advanced tab click on "Change" in the Virtual memory section. Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives." Select the radio button at "No paging file" and click on Set following to OK.


Procedure to disable hibernation mode – Delete the Hiberfil.sys, Pagefile.sys file and run the command powercfg-h off in an elevated command prompt. Then restart the computer and run the Bitlocker drive to check if problem is solved.
