How to Fix specified network name no longer available error - Most of the Offices have Computers being connected with one another in order to share resources like Printers, files etc. But sometimes during sharing resources the system will display an error "The specified network name is no longer available". The Computers in an office are connected under the same local windows domain. But with this network error the sharing of resources not possible. While the shared files are visible to the PC connected to the printer.

  1. Discard/Disable Symantec End Point Protection – The possible reason of raising this error is due to interference with "Symantec Endpoint Protection". So, user need to disable or discard it as soon as possible. To do so you need to follow steps given below-


    1. Go to Start and select Command Prompt (admin privilege) and type the command smc -stop.

    2. It will partially stop the Symantec endpoint protection. So, check if it works else go next.

    3. Type the command smc -disable – ntp. You can also stop firewall by entering command smc -disable -ntp -p <password>



  2. Disable the active antivirus program – You may temporary disable antivirus and check if problem is solved else follow the next steps.

  3. Allow Permissions to the Shared folder – This error might be occurred due to permission issue. Right click on the folder and select the properties. In the security tab, select Advanced option. Navigate to the list of owners. Verify and modify the permission. After this check if problem is fixed, else go for the next step.

  4. A user can Enable SMBv1, SMBv2 and SMBv3 on the problematic system.

  5. You can Turn off User Account Control (Temporary) – Although Microsoft do not recommend this step. So just turn off temporarily and check if problem is fixed.
