IBM Plex Typeface will soon replace Helvetica Neue

IBM Plex Typeface will soon replace Helvetica Neue - IBM has recently unveiled its new Typeface known as IBM Plex, which will soon replace its previously running typeface Helvetica Neue.  IBM was stuck with Helvetica Neue typeface for years. IBM has unveiled its new typeface after continuous development process of 2 years by their intended team of designers. The initiative has shown a positive review from news website Quartz, commented –“a graceful hybrid of blocky, engineered shapes with natural gestures from handwriting”.

IBM Plex Typeface will soon replace Helvetica Neue

Since IBM Plex should be used by IBMers for all corporate typeface like others. In 1961, IBM launched an innovative electric type writer called as Selectric, which was really good at that time. It is not just because of its appearance like a sleek boxy curvilinear design that was available in a variety of colours. But it is due to its ability to change typefaces easily.

The typewriter would replace the traditional mechanical type bars and movable cartridges with a golf ball shaped element that spin to imprint all letters and characters on paper. Since the ball was replaceable, this allowed typists to change typefaces by replacing a new one. A French design outfit has come up with an app called prototype which makes it easier for companies to create their own custom typefaces.

The period emphasised ordinary people to express themselves through typefaces. But with the emergence of computer technology, we are using around 190 different types of typefaces in Microsoft Word 2016. At present all top performers were using their own part of branding instead of designing a custom typeface.

However IBM is making the typeface available as open source, so that it can be downloaded from anywhere. Additional information added - that IBM Plex is designed to be legible and easily readable in long, dense digital documents, even on a small mobile phone screen.
