Sony with IBM Created 330 TB Storage into a Palm Sized Cartridge - On 2 August 2017, IBM Research Scientists achieved a new world record in tape storing. The latest achievement has the potential to store 330 TB of uncompressed data on a single tape cartridge that would fit in the palm of human hand. Sony with the Collaboration of IBM Researchers developed a new Magnetic Tape that can store data upto 330 TB of Files in a single palm-sized Cartridge that can hold upto 15 TB storage. That much of storage can store 3379 compressed copies of Wikipedia articles on a single palm size new tape. The new magnetic storage was designed only for Servers and data centres, but not for home users.

The new record of 201 Gb/in2 (gigabits per square inch) in areal density was achieved on a prototype sputtered magnetic tape developed by Sony Storage Media Solutions.
In this photo, IBM scientist Dr. Mark Lantz, holds a one square inch piece of Sony Storage Media Solutions sputtered tape, which can hold 201 Gigabytes, a new world record.

The new magnetic tape have strength of recording density upto 201 GB per square inch, which is 20 times better than the current recording capacity. In order to establish such feature the team has created a way to reduce the Gap between the magnetic tape and magnetic head.

The team has also developed a lubricant to help the magnetic head to move smoothly, which will improve read/write speed. The researchers has extended the tape length by storing the data in a sputtered manner across multiple layers of Nano particles. This achievement by IBM & Sony researchers could make the storage capacity double every two year in coming future.
