What is Disk Operating System DOSDefinition of DOSThe full form of DOS is Disk Operating System. It was the earliest form of Operating System run on computers. It uses a disk storage device like floppy disk, hard disk drive or optical disc to operate on computer machine during boot process. It provides a file system for reading, organising and writing files on the storage disk. This Operating system were available on mainframe, microprocessors and Personal computers. It was most often used as MS DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). MS Dos was the standard operating system for IBM compatible personal computer. The initial versions of DOS were very simple and resembled easily on another operating system called CP/M. History of Disk Operating System (DOS)



In August 1981, IBM first released as Personal computer on which PC DOS version 1.0 was used. It support only floppy disks. In 1983, DOS version 2.0 was released for IBM PC XT model. Tim Paterson was the person who first wrote DOS OS.


The DOS operating system uses various commands to work on computer. DOS Operating system was not graphic based OS. DOS commands are the commands available in MS-DOS that can be used to interact with the operating system and other command line based software. Now Windows, and other modern OSs use a graphics-based system designed for touch or a mouse. What is Disk Operating System DOS is a OS which can be accessed by single user only.

ChdirTo display the drive letter and folder that you are currently in. It can also be used to change the drive and/or directory
ChkdskTo identify and identify and resolve certain hard drive errors.
CopyIt copies one or more files from one location to another.
DateThe date command is used to show or change the current date.
DelThe del command is used to delete one or more files. The del command is the same as erase command.
DirThe dir command is used to display a list of files and folders containing inside a folder that you are currently working on.
DiskcopyTo copy the entire contents of one floppy disk to another.
EditThe edit command starts the MS-DOS Editor tool which is used to create and modify text files.
EraseThe erase command is used to delete one or more files. It is same as del command
FdiskThe fdisk command is used to create, manage, and delete hard drive partitions.
FindThe find command is used to search for a specified text string in one or more files
GotoThe goto command is used in a batch or script file to direct the command process to a labelled line in the script.
Graphics
The graphics command is used to load a program that can print graphics.
KeybThe keyb command is used to configure a keyboard for a specific language(Hindi/ English/ etc)
MkdirThe mkdir command is used to create a new folder.
MoveIt is used to move one or files from one folder to another. For renaming directories it is also used.
PathTo display or set a specific path available to executable files.
RenameIt is used to change the name of the individual file that you specify.
RmdirIt is used to delete an existing or completely empty folder.
ScandiskIt is used to start Microsoft Scandisk, a disk repair program.
SysIt is used to to copy the MS-DOS system files and command interpreter to a disk
TimeIt is used to show or change the current time.
VerifyIt is used to enable or disable the ability of Command Prompt, or MS-DOS, to verify that files are written correctly to a disk.

  1. 86-DOS – It was developed by Seattle Computer Products for its 8086 based s-100 computer.

  2. MS-DOS – It was developed for based on 86 DOS for 86 based personal computer.

  3. PC-DOS – For IBM PC and Compatibles.


  4. Concurrent DOS – For Compatible Multiuser Multitasking Operating system.
