The period between 1943 to 1958 is called as the First Generation of Computer. This Generation uses Vacuum Tubes as the main components of Computer System. The Vacuum Tubes are generally – 5 to 10 cm in length and often many of them are used in computers. They acquire entire room and often broke while handling. The Vacuum Tube is an electronic device used to amplify a signal by controlling the movement of electrons in an evacuated space. They were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deal of electricity, the first computers generated a lot of heat, which was often the cause of malfunctions. The UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples of first-generation computing devices.

The period between 1959 to 1964 is called as the Second Generation of Computer. This Generation of Computer uses Transistor as the main component of Computer Systems. The Bell Laboratory has developed Transistor capable of performing many of the tasks as done through Vacuum tube. But difference between them is Size of the components. The first successful computer uses transistor in 1959. Since the component size is small so Computer size was reduced. The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube, allowing computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient and more reliable than their first-generation predecessors.

Second-Generation computers moved from cryptic binary machine language to symbolic, or assembly language, which allowed programmers to specify instructions in words. High-level programming languages were also being developed at this time. For Example: COBOL and FORTRAN.

The period between 1965 to 1970 is called as the Third Generation of Computer. This Generation of Computer uses Integrated Circuit (IC) as the essential component of Computer System. Integrated Circuits (IC) was made of Silicon Chips, called semi-conductor, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers. Instead of using punched cards and printouts, the computer uses Keyboards, Monitors and Interface with an operating Systems. Now the device can run many applications at one time where the central program was monitored by the memory. One of the major advantage of ICs is smaller in size. Again the computer size decreased and finally available to large audience.
Another feature of this period is that computer software became much more powerful and flexible and for the first time more than one program could share the computer's resources at the same time.

The Period between 1971 to Present is called as the Fourth Generation of Computer. This Generation of Computer uses Microprocessor (VLSI) as the main components of Computer Systems. Thousands of integrated circuits were built onto a single silicon chip so now the size reduced many times. Now the size of the computer reduces so much that it will fit on the palm of our hands. The CPU, memory and Input/ Output device are built on a single chip. The Macintosh introduced by APPLE, as one of the most powerful computer which uses Microprocessor inside it. The fourth generation also saw the development of Graphic User Interface, mouse and hand held devices.
