Input Devices:
An Input device are mechanical device which helps user to input the data in to your computer machine. There are various types of input device by which a user can ask computer to solve their query or processes. The input data form may be text, sound, video, artwork etc. Then the computer understand the input what a user is asking for. Then Process it and displays output in computer screen or output devices. Input and Output Devices of a Computer is explained below in understandable language.

The common input devices are Mouse, Keyboard, Scanner, Joy Stick, Touch pad, Track ball, Bar code Reader etc. In this article we discuss properties of each input in simple and precise manner.

Who invented the Keyboard?

Keyboard: A keyboard is an input device which look just like a typewriter. The QWERT keyboard was invented in 18th Century by Christopher Latham Sholes. The keyboard consists of numbers of buttons for entering both Alphabets and Numbers. It also consists of Control keys to give direct information to computer to process information. The control keys include ALT, CTRL, Backspace, Delete, Shift and Esc. Each key has unique use like Delete – it can be used to delete the content which are typed in word or any text documents. The keyboard also include arrow key to point anywhere in page. The keyboard also include function keys from F1 to F12. Each function keys has unique use like F4 – which is used to Shut Down the computer system. The F2 key is used to save the recent document typed in. The keyboard also include Number keys from 0 to 9. It also include mathematical operators like - +,-, /,* etc. In modern times various types of keyboard are there like Multimedia keyboards, Wireless keyboards etc.


Who invented the Mouse?

A mouse is a pointing device which looks like a mouse. The mouse was invented in 1963 by Douglas Engelbart. It consists of two buttons, one on the left and one on the right. There is one wheel at the front middle of it. The mouse is a hand held device used to control cursor in a GUI can move and select text, icons, files, and folders. The mouse should be place on a flat surface such as a mouse pad or table. The main functions of a mouse is – Move the Cursor, Open and execute a program, Select an item, drag and drop, Hover, Scroll and many other jobs.

The mouse can be connected to a computer through ports or wireless connections. The major connectivity options are – Bluetooth, Infrared, PS/2 port, Serial port, USB. Now a days Bluetooth connectivity is used in large scale. There are different types of Mouse – Cordless mouse, Foot mouse, Intellimouse (Wheel Mouse), J-Mouse, Mechanical, Optical, Touchpad, Track ball, track point. In laptops, touchpads are used as mouse. The smart phones and tablets uses touch screen as method of input.


Who invented Touchpad?

Touch pad is a pointing device which is used in Laptop Computer. The touchpad was invented by George E. Gerpheide in 1988. A touchpad is operated by using your finger and dragging it across the flat surface of the touchpad. The cursor is controlled by moving the finger in touchpad surface. The two buttons are located at the bottom of the touchpad. The click can be done when someone hit gently on the touchpad surface. The touch pad has advantage over mouse as it does not want more space and embedded in Laptop computer. Who invented the Joystick?

Joystick is an input device which consist of a stick which pivots in all direction to navigate the cursor or entity accordingly. The Joy stick was invented by George Stick in 1910. The joystick is used in computer games and assistive technology. It is the held lever which is used in airplane to navigate it in any directions. It is also used in industrial applications like cranes, assembly lines, forestry equipment, mining trucks, and excavators.

Who invented the Touch Screen?

A touch screen is like a computer screen which is used by touching it with a finger or a stylus pen, instead of using a mouse and keyboard. Touchscreens are mostly used in personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablet computers, smartphones and other devices.

The touch screen was invented by Dr. G Samuel Hurst in 1970. There are two types of touch screen – Resistive and Capacitive touch screen. The touch screen is made of insulated glass coated with a transparent conductor such as Indium Tin Oxide (ITO).

A Resistive Screen – it consists of number of layers. When a user press the screen, the outer layer pushes the next inner layer and work is done. This type of touch screen are versatile as they can be operated with a finger, stylus or any other objects.

A capacitive Screen – It depends on electrical properties of user body to detect when and where on a display the user touches. Because of this,
capacitive displays can be controlled with very light touches of a finger.

The other input devices are Trackball, Graphic tablet, Scanners, Microphones, MIDI Devices and others.

Output devices:

The device which is used to display the output of any processing which is done by computer system. The output may be text, audio and videos etc. Although the output of any processing is done by using the input which is given by user. There are different types of output devices like – CRT Monitor, Printer, Speaker and others.

The device which displays output in pictorial form. It look just like a television that was used before. Now a days LCD, LED type monitor are used which consume less power. The monitor was developed by karl Ferdinand braun in 1897. There are three types of monitor – CRT (cathode ray tube), LCD (liquid crystal display) and LED (Light Emitting diodes).

A printer is an external hardware output device that takes the electronic data stored on a computer and generates a hard copy of it.. Printers are one of the most popular computer peripherals and are commonly used to print text and photos.

Laser printers:
A laser printer produces good quality images by technology used by photocopiers. A drum coated with photosensitive material is charged, then an image is written onto it by a laser (or LEDs) which makes those areas lose the charge. The drum then rolls through toner (tiny plastic particles of pigment) that are attracted to the charged areas of the drum. The toner is then deposited onto the paper, and then fused into the paper with heat.

Inkjet Printers:

An inkjet printer is a computer peripheral that produces hard copy by spraying ink onto paper. A typical inkjet printer can produce copy with a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch (dpi ). Some inkjet printers can make full colour hard copies at 600 dpi or more. Many models include other devices such as a scanner, photocopier, and dedicated fax machine along with the printer in a single box.
